IMAGE AS TEXT/TEXT AS IMAGE
I like to read. A lot. So no doubt reading has
always influenced my art. In this series of works the influence is
quite overt. I have made a visual language using my images to represent
letters of the alphabet or occasionally short words.
The image code is in addition to the visual “code”
that is always part of a painting: color, line, shape, texture,
movement, etc.
I’ve had a lot of fun with this series and have
gained new appreciation for the difficulty of language as well as the
difficulty painters have with nearly every painting.
Expressing ideas with language is not as easy as
playing ping-pong. Words get lost, misinterpreted, misused. I have no
solution outside myself to heal a world that needs to be healed by
honest, considerate language. I keep working on the language of
painting. The communication is more immediate and direct.
